Ale Brew made with top-fermenting yeast that can impart a distinctive fruitiness
Altbier German term for a top-fermenting brew
Barley Wine English term for an extra strong ale
Berliner Weisse Classic Berlin style wheat beer with quenching tartness and high carbonation
Bière de Garde French strong pale ale or “keeping beer”
Bitter Ale English term for a pale ale
Black IPA IPA with roasted malts
Bock German term for a strong ale
Brown Ale Ale of a brown color, as opposed to pale
Cream Ale American term for a very pale and light bodied ale
Doppelbock “Double bock”, German extra strong lager
Dubbel Belgian term, an extra strong beer, brewed using dark candy syrup
Dunkel German for dark
Faro A lambic sweetened with cane sugar
Framboise– Raspberry beer, usually based on lambic
Gose Wheat beer with a key ingredient—salt
Gueuze Blend of young and old lambic beers
Gruit Brewed with herbs such as sweet gale, mugwort, yarrow, horehound and heather in place of hops
Hefe German for “yeast”, indicating the beer is bottle conditioned
